Technology Scotland recently caught up with our member, Vix Technology,  as part of our Member Spotlight series. Read below to find out more about them.

What does your organisation do?

Vix Technology is a trusted transport technology partner, specialising in intelligent transportation systems, automated fare collection, real-time passenger information, fleet management, and transit analytics. More than 500 cities and regions worldwide use our solutions.

With over 35 years of experience, we combine deep industry expertise with a forward-looking approach. It’s our goal to help transport authorities and operators navigate the complexities of modern public transport, improving efficiency and creating the best passenger experiences. We offer more than robust, reliable systems – as a long-term partner to our customers, we bring ongoing support, insight, collaborative innovation, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Our solutions are designed to be modular, open, and future-ready, giving our customers freedom from vendor lock-in. They have the flexibility to implement end-to-end systems, or integrate legacy and new components from a variety of technology suppliers.

For passengers, Vix enhances the journey experience through real-time information where and when they need it, and simple fare payment experiences that make multimodal journeys feel smoother. Our technology is proven and delivered at scale – including a wide range of displays, ticketing hardware, and data-rich platforms that unify and optimise management.

Driven by a collaborative mindset, Vix is committed to delivering social value. Our technology helps cities build smarter, more connected transport networks. It’s our mission to make public transport the optimal way to travel for every one. Our services support inclusion, accessibility, sustainability, and community wellbeing, while helping cities and regions to thrive.

What is your organisation’s biggest achievement?

One of our biggest achievements is supporting Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver the UK’s first multimodal “Tap and Go” system across the Bee Network.

This was a major milestone, not just for Manchester but for public transport in the UK. Tap and Go enables passengers to travel across bus and tram using contactless payments, reducing friction and making integrated journeys feel simple and intuitive.
Behind the scenes, the programme brings together complex systems to manage fares, payments, and performance across a growing multimodal network. It has also played a key role in supporting TfGM’s vision for bus franchising, helping turn a bold ambition for a more integrated, London-style transport system into a reality.

Tell us something exciting about your organisation

We’ve been investing heavily in our rail solutions, including smart gates, platform validators and a versatile mobile and ticket office retailing suite. It’s great to see that momentum reflected in a number of new or extended projects with train operating companies. These include Merseyrail, Great Western Railway, Transport for Wales, and Northern Trains.

Although we’re probably best known for our real-time information and account-based ticketing solutions across bus and tram networks in the UK, our rail footprint is growing rapidly.

Our Digital Ticket Issuing System (TIS) retails £400m of train tickets a year, our smart rail gates now support five train operating companies, and we’ve rolled out 3,000 rail validators for seven UK rail operators. We provide rail network access control for Transport for Wales PAYG and Merseyrail Tap and Go schemes. And our multi-modal ABT scheme for the Bee Network, currently rolled-out for tram and bus, will onboard heavy rail in the near future.

Alongside this, we’re working with Transport for London and Transport for Greater Manchester and many other local authorities to deliver real-time passenger information at scale, helping improve the passenger experience through more accurate, accessible journey information.

It’s an exciting time for Vix, with a succession of challenging projects in the pipeline. While we can’t share everything just yet, there’s plenty more to come.

Why did you join Technology Scotland?

We joined Technology Scotland to build stronger links with Scotland’s transport and mobility community. As a strategic technology partner supporting some of the largest transport authorities in the UK, we feel strongly that public transport works best when authorities, operators, innovators and policymakers move in the same direction.

Through MaaS Scotland, we want to share what we’ve learned delivering ticketing, real-time passenger information and transit analytics in cities around the world. We want to contribute our expertise to other members, and help Scotland in its efforts to put passengers first and deliver smarter, smoother journeys. It’s also important to us to learn from the work happening here in Scotland, and to stay close to emerging standards and regulations.

Most of all, we joined to help remove barriers to better public transport and keep projects moving, from ideas on the drawing board, to services that people can rely on.
