Shaping the Future of Space Photonics: Opportunities, Challenges and Inputs to ESA Harmonisation 2027

This session will bring together stakeholders from across the UK space photonics sector to explore the ESA Technology Harmonisation process, the upcoming 2027 Photonics Harmonisation cycle, and the opportunities for the UK sector to shape future technology priorities.
The ESA Technology Harmonisation process is important because it gives the supply chain an opportunity to influence what technologies Europe needs to develop, when they need to be available, and where capability gaps exist—rather than simply responding to requirements once they have already been set.
By the end of the session participants will:
  • Understand the ESA Technology Harmonisation process and how the sector can influence future technology priorities.
  • Gain awareness of the planned 2027 Photonics Harmonisation cycle.
  • Identify key challenges, capability gaps and future technology needs.
  • Contribute evidence and insights that can feed into both ESA Harmonisation activities and broader UK space photonics discussions.

Speakers

  • Catherine Holt, Senior Technology Harmonisation Lead at UK Space Agency
  • Elaine Livera, Knowledge Transfer Manager – Space at Innovate UK Business Connect
  • Donald MacLeod, Business Development Manager at UK Astronomy Technology Centre
  • Tom Dickson – Knowledge Transfer Manager – Quantum and Photonics Technologies at Innovate UK Business Connect
