Photonics for Space: Special Interest Group
About our SIG
Heriot-Watt University is currently commissioning a new optical ground station facility on campus. The research is a critical ground segment for two upcoming satellite quantum communications missions launching in 2025/26, and they are seeking to build more collaborations to utilise the research facility fully, particularly in areas beyond quantum, such as optical communications and space situational awareness.
At this meeting of the Photonics for Space special interest group (SIG) Dr Ross Donaldson will outline the research facility’s capabilities, and there will also be a short tour of the optical ground station site (including inside the dome).
Heriot-Watt University Space Cluster Workshop
On the day of the SIG, Heriot-Watt University is hosting a broader workshop to raise awareness and facilitate engagement between the university and local industry in the space and satellite technology sector. This event will feature a series of 3-minute pitches from research teams and student societies, a catered poster event, and a facilities tour.
The SIG will be a breakout session during the facilities tour, and SIG attendees will then do a separate tour afterwards.
SIG attendees are welcome to join for the full day, from lunch or just for the SIG meeting itself.
If attending the whole event, please email Ross Donaldson ([email protected]) in addition to regsitering to let him know that you would like to attend the full event.
