SUMMARY:Recent Developments in Optical Design
DESCRIPTION:Where: Thales\, 1 Linthouse Road\, Glasgow \nWhen: 22nd March 2018\, 08:30 – 13:30 \n  \n Register here >\n** Please note: tickets to this event are limited and reserved strictly for optical designers currently based in Scotland ** \n  \nPhotonics in Scotland \nFor over a century\, Scotland has been at the cutting edge of photonic innovation. With over 50 companies at the heart of the Scottish photonics cluster\, the economic impact is substantial. \nApproximately half of the cluster’s £750m output is exported\, with the rest supporting important domestic sectors including defence\, oil and gas\, renewable energy\, manufacturing and communications. \n  \nAbout the Workshop \nOptical design is a rapidly developing field in the sector. Recent advancements in lasers\, compound semiconductors\, and end user applications\, coupled with growing demand for higher speed\, higher power photonic devices present increasingly challenging demands on optical system design. \nFaced with these increased performance requirements\, optical designers must utilise new technologies\, including improved software\, powerful computing platforms\, new optical materials and advanced coatings to improve overall optical and system performance. \nWith this in mind\, the Scottish Optoelectronics Association (SOA) aims to create a working group focused on optical design in Scotland\, providing a series of workshops for engineers\, scientists and designers to network\, explore new collaboration opportunities\, and stay up-to-date with advancements in this field. \nThe first workshop of this kind will take place at Thales in Glasgow on 22nd March 2018. At this half-day event\, attendees will hear 4 of Scotland’s leading photonics organisations discuss their current work\, strengths and challenges in optical design. There will also be excellent opportunities for networking\, a round-table discussion of future potential workshops\, and refreshments. \n  \nAgenda \n08:30 – Morning refreshments and networking\n09:15 – SOA welcome: Stephen Taylor\, CEO of Technology Scotland\n09:30 – Ian Thomson\, Thales\n10:00 – David Henry and David Lee\, UK ATC\n10:30 – Networking break\n11:00 – Duncan Walker\, Walker Optics: ‘Freelance optical design – an independent view’\n11:30 – Speaker 4: TBC\n12:00 – Optical Design roundtable discussion: Stephen Taylor\, CEO of Technology Scotland

SUMMARY:Analysis for Innovators Programme 2018 Roadshow - Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Technology Scotland is pleased to be co-hosting the Analysis for Innovators Programme in Glasgow\, taking place on February 23rd in Glasgow. \n REGISTER HERE >\nAbout the Programme \n\n\n\nMeasurement technology is a bit of an unsung hero – it doesn’t have a high profile but crucially affects just about every technical product or process you come across. So companies do not often think that measurement can be the cause of a problem or could provide the next step in improving their processes. \nA new programme to help provide access to measurement technology facilities \nThe National Physical Laboratory (NPL)\, along with three other national laboratories (NEL\, STFC and LGC)\, have partnered with Innovate UK to launch a new programme ‘Analysis for Innovators‘\, designed to help companies of all sizes get access to facilities and experts to help work on problems. \nThe Analysis for Innovators (A4I) programme is different in that it targets competitiveness and productivity head on\, by offering cutting edge R&D\, expertise and facilities to UK companies that want to solve an analysis or measurement problem from within their existing business. This could be an issue of precision or accuracy of measurement on a production line for example\, which you have been unable to solve using standard available technologies and techniques. \nNPL and the partner laboratories run some of the most advanced cutting-edge facilities\, techniques and technologies available in the world\, right here in the UK. \nThey will be making their expertise available first through initial free technical consultancy brokered to successful applicants to A4I\, and then through the offer of financial support to allow industry access to their unique facilities and expertise in optional follow-on R&D projects. Innovate UK expect the programme to particularly appeal to manufacturing companies\, especially those involved in complex supply chains\, but companies applying may be from any sector. \nTechnology Scotland is co-hosting the Glasgow roadshow for the Analysis for Innovators Programme\, which will explain the programme and how it differs from other funding competitions\, both in terms of its scope and the online application process and schedule. \nThe Analysis for Innovators Programme will open officially in March 2018\, with up to £4m on offer. Make sure to come to the Glasgow roadshow event to hear how it differs from other funding competitions\, both in terms of its scope and the online application process and schedule. \n REGISTER HERE >\nOther Roadshow Dates/Locations: \n\n13th February\, London – hosted by NPL\n16th February\, Birmingham\n20th February\, Cardiff – in partnership with the Welsh Government\n23rd February\, Glasgow – in partnership with Technology Scotland\n2nd March\, Belfast

Our tech focus for our January 2018 event will be robotics and AI. \nThere are some ground-breaking innovators and knowledge experts in Scotland driving our robotics and AI capabilities\, including our keynote speakers Dr Rachael Jack\, Lecturer in Psychology at the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology and School of Psychology\, University of Glasgow and Dr Frank Broz\, Assistant Professor and Research Lead of the Robotics Lab at Heriot Watt University. \nAs a group\, we will redefine the “Art of Possible” by broadening of our understanding and perspectives on enabling robotics and AI in the real-world; sharing resources\, sparking creative ideas and supporting creative collaborations to innovate for society. \nON THE DAY \n\nI. BROADCAST: TECH INTRO | Info Session\, Speaker Presentations and Live Demos\n\n(led by Dr Susie Mitchell\, Glasgow City of Science and Innovation) \nRobotics and AI are set to transform our daily lives. Dr. Rachael Jack will explore the ever-evolving concepts and technologies that are powering the social robotics revolution–which will impact across a range of sectors from retail\, arts and entertainment and communications\, to education and social care. \nDr. Jack’s research focuses on exploring how we can replicate facial expressions artificially in order to design social robots of the future. Rachael gained her PhD and at the University of Glasgow and is now a Lecturer at the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology and School of Psychology at the University of Glasgow. \nWe will then hear from Dr Frank Broz\, Assistant Professor and Research Lead of the Robotics Lab – Heriot Watt University. Dr Broz’s primary research interests are in human-robot interaction\, artificial intelligence\, planning\, machine learning\, social interaction\, and nonverbal behavior. \n\nII. RAPID ‘STEAMS’ CHALLENGE WORKSHOP\n\nIn an interactive workshop you will explore possible applications of the technology through a condensed design innovation methodology. Dr Duncan Booker\, Resilience lead for Glasgow City Council will set down the challenge–the future of work. The industrial revolution saw machine power triumph over muscle power; with super-human robots on the horizon what will happen to our job prospects when robots and algorithms surpass what our brains can do? You will explore the tech and our social challenge and evaluate and ideate\, prototype and communicate your ideas in a three-minute pitch to the whole group. Prizes will be awarded to the best ideas! \n\nIII. WRAP UP | Reflections and Discussion\n\n\nIV. BEER\, WINE AND BITES | Get Social\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there. We always seek a strong STEAMS (Science\, Tech\, Engineering\, Art & Design\, Maths\, Social Sciences) cross-sectoral presence to co-create with impact – so share this event with friends and colleagues! \nPlaces are limited; please contact emma.dixon@technologyscotland.scot with any questions \n  \nWhat previous Art of Possible attendees said: \n“A stimulating & enjoyable experience both learning from experts\, and sharing & developing ideas amongst fellow participants” \n“Great to see the innovation community in Scotland coming together to try to encourage growth in the sector.
