SUMMARY:Advanced in Optical Design: Workshop 4
DESCRIPTION:Where: UK ATC\, Royal Observatory\, Blackford Hill View\, Edinburgh\, EH9 3HJ \nWhen: 15 January 2019\, 09:30 – 12:30 \nIf you wish to attend this event\, please email emma.dixon@technologyscotland.scot \n** Please note: tickets to this event are limited and reserved strictly for optical designers currently based in Scotland ** \nPhotonics in Scotland \nFor over a century\, Scotland has been at the cutting edge of photonic innovation. With over 50 companies at the heart of the Scottish photonics cluster\, the economic impact is substantial. \nApproximately half of the cluster’s £750m output is exported\, with the rest supporting important domestic sectors including defence\, oil and gas\, renewable energy\, manufacturing and communications. \nAbout the Workshop \nOptical design is a rapidly developing field in the sector. Recent advancements in lasers\, compound semiconductors\, and end user applications\, coupled with growing demand for higher speed\, higher power photonic devices present increasingly challenging demands on optical system design. \nFaced with these increased performance requirements\, optical designers must utilise new technologies\, including improved software\, powerful computing platforms\, new optical materials and advanced coatings to improve overall optical and system performance. \nWith this in mind\, the Scottish Optoelectronics Association (SOA) has created an Optical Design Working Group\, meeting once a quarter and aimed at engineers\, scientists and designers. These workshops are designed to network\, explore new collaboration opportunities\, and stay up-to-date with advancements in this field. \nAt this half-day event\, attendees will hear one of Scotland’s leading photonics organisations discuss their current work\, strengths and challenges in optical design. Following that\, we will discuss opportunities regarding training in Optical Design in Scotland.

SUMMARY:Recent Developments in Optical Design
DESCRIPTION:Where: Thales\, 1 Linthouse Road\, Glasgow \nWhen: 22nd March 2018\, 08:30 – 13:30 \n  \n Register here >\n** Please note: tickets to this event are limited and reserved strictly for optical designers currently based in Scotland ** \n  \nPhotonics in Scotland \nFor over a century\, Scotland has been at the cutting edge of photonic innovation. \n  \nAbout the Workshop \nOptical design is a rapidly developing field in the sector. \nWith this in mind\, the Scottish Optoelectronics Association (SOA) aims to create a working group focused on optical design in Scotland\, providing a series of workshops for engineers\, scientists and designers to network\, explore new collaboration opportunities\, and stay up-to-date with advancements in this field. \nThe first workshop of this kind will take place at Thales in Glasgow on 22nd March 2018. At this half-day event\, attendees will hear 4 of Scotland’s leading photonics organisations discuss their current work\, strengths and challenges in optical design. There will also be excellent opportunities for networking\, a round-table discussion of future potential workshops\, and refreshments. \n  \nAgenda \n08:30 – Morning refreshments and networking\n09:15 – SOA welcome: Stephen Taylor\, CEO of Technology Scotland\n09:30 – Ian Thomson\, Thales\n10:00 – David Henry and David Lee\, UK ATC\n10:30 – Networking break\n11:00 – Duncan Walker\, Walker Optics: ‘Freelance optical design – an independent view’\n11:30 – Speaker 4: TBC\n12:00 – Optical Design roundtable discussion: Stephen Taylor\, CEO of Technology Scotland

SUMMARY:Analysis for Innovators Programme 2018 Roadshow - Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Technology Scotland is pleased to be co-hosting the Analysis for Innovators Programme in Glasgow\, taking place on February 23rd in Glasgow. \n REGISTER HERE >\nAbout the Programme \n\n\n\nMeasurement technology is a bit of an unsung hero – it doesn’t have a high profile but crucially affects just about every technical product or process you come across. So companies do not often think that measurement can be the cause of a problem or could provide the next step in improving their processes. \nA new programme to help provide access to measurement technology facilities \nThe National Physical Laboratory (NPL)\, along with three other national laboratories (NEL\, STFC and LGC)\, have partnered with Innovate UK to launch a new programme ‘Analysis for Innovators‘\, designed to help companies of all sizes get access to facilities and experts to help work on problems. \nThe Analysis for Innovators (A4I) programme is different in that it targets competitiveness and productivity head on\, by offering cutting edge R&D\, expertise and facilities to UK companies that want to solve an analysis or measurement problem from within their existing business. This could be an issue of precision or accuracy of measurement on a production line for example\, which you have been unable to solve using standard available technologies and techniques. \nNPL and the partner laboratories run some of the most advanced cutting-edge facilities\, techniques and technologies available in the world\, right here in the UK. \nThey will be making their expertise available first through initial free technical consultancy brokered to successful applicants to A4I\, and then through the offer of financial support to allow industry access to their unique facilities and expertise in optional follow-on R&D projects. Innovate UK expect the programme to particularly appeal to manufacturing companies\, especially those involved in complex supply chains\, but companies applying may be from any sector. \nTechnology Scotland is co-hosting the Glasgow roadshow for the Analysis for Innovators Programme\, which will explain the programme and how it differs from other funding competitions\, both in terms of its scope and the online application process and schedule. \nThe Analysis for Innovators Programme will open officially in March 2018\, with up to £4m on offer. Make sure to come to the Glasgow roadshow event to hear how it differs from other funding competitions\, both in terms of its scope and the online application process and schedule. \n REGISTER HERE >\nOther Roadshow Dates/Locations: \n\n13th February\, London – hosted by NPL\n16th February\, Birmingham\n20th February\, Cardiff – in partnership with the Welsh Government\n23rd February\, Glasgow – in partnership with Technology Scotland\n2nd March\, Belfast
