SUMMARY:Opening up Photonics: Unconscious Bias and Embedding Culture Change
DESCRIPTION:The Opening Up Photonics Initiative – a collaboration between Photonics Scotland\, University of Glasgow\, Institute of Physics and the Knowledge Transfer Network – has partnered with Equate Scotland to deliver a series of training workshops exploring practical suggestions for improving gender diversity within your organisation. \nBackground \nThe Photonics industry has long struggled to increase the participation and engagement of women. A recent SPIE study indicated that\, across Europe\, female representation in the sector is as low as 20%. \nIt is clear\, therefore\, that Scottish Photonics will need to target greater engagement from this underrepresented group to ensure the future success of the sector. As well as unlocking the well documented commercial and cultural benefits of a more gender diverse workforce\, this approach will be vital in securing the necessary number of skilled workers to support future growth. \nEarlier this year\, Photonics Scotland published a vision paper for the Photonics Sector in Scotland\, setting out a series of recommendations that will support the goal to triple the size of the sector by 2030. Included within these recommendations was the creation of a Women In Photonics Initiative that would seek to identify barriers to female engagement in the sector. Working with both industry and academia\, the initiative will look to provide employers and educators with the necessary tools to encourage more women into photonics careers. \nWorkshop – 29th January 2020 \nThis session starts by developing capacity in understanding prejudice and bias\, the consequences it can have on decision making\, and crucially\, develops strategic steps which can be taken to mitigate bias within processes\, systems and workplace culture. \nThe session then focuses on how whole organisation culture change can be achieved. We consider how equality and inclusion can be sustained at all levels of an organisation\, how it can become part of the everyday fabric and create an action plan to take forward. \nThis is the second in a series of workshops exploring gender diversity in Photonics. However\, previous attendance at the first workshop is not required for participation in this event. \nRegistration is free and spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This course is expected to be extremely popular and attendees will be limited to one per organisation. Ecometrica works globally – from monitoring deforestation in the chocolate supply chain in West Africa to the spread of rhododendrons in the West of Scotland! Sarah will talk about the potential of UAVs to unlock a wealth of information when combined with satellite data in the context of Ecometrica’s Scottish Earth Observation Service (SEOS). \n_________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nCarrick McLelland founded Ground Level Up in 2014; a visual content company that specialises in producing high-end\, cinematic video for the online and social media audiences. Part of Ground Level Up’s expertise is in utilising drone technology to deliver videos with a unique perspective. The use of drones has allowed Ground Level Up to deliver a service with a high-end output for an extremely cost-effective input. Carrick will talk about how this has given Ground Level Up its competitive edge in making high-end visual content accessible. \n__________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nKristopher Fisher is Chief Development Officer of Glasgow-based Dronely. Kristopher is also a Music Technology Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland and a proactive member of the post-audio industry. He has an interest in film\, television and games domains as well as the digital media sector. Kristopher’s focus on digital soundtracks for trailers has seen him collaborate with EA Games\, Ubisoft\, Google and the BBC\, to name a few.From capturing breath-taking imagery for broadcast to developing and deploying drones to cope with the toughest industrial challenges; Kristopher’s relationship with drones has evolved as quickly as the technology itself. Kristopher will be talking about how he has put drones to work for the benefit of STEM industries and how Dronely is moving towards focusing on the maritime sector. Working directly with the world’s largest shipping and tanker fleets\, the company has a range of projects in development aimed at shaping the future of tomorrow’s drones. \n______________________________________________________________________________________________ \nRuth Oliver is Business Engagement Executive at Interface. Interface acts a central point of access for industry to collaborate with the world-leading knowledge\, expertise\, specialist facilities and technologies within Scotland’s universities\, research institutes and colleges. Ruth joins us to talk about how Interface can support innovation-ready SMEs to innovate with impact\, with a special focus on how the agency has supported companies using drones to grow\, scale and succeed. \n_________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nDale Colley founded Altitude Thinking in 2018. Dale’s background is in engineering. He worked as an apprentice electrician at the age of 16 then went to university at 22 to study Electrical Power Engineering\, and is currently in his 3rd year. \nAltitude Thinking is an environmental company focused on water pollution and aquatic environmental conditions. The company provides a service to collect water quality data with unique remote-control and autonomous surface water-borne drone\, the AquaBot. Altitude Thinking addresses the problem of inefficient and ineffective water quality monitoring. These extraordinary products\, which emerged from pioneering work carried out by Dr Isaac Wang\, Herriot Watt University and Prof Will Shu\, Strathclyde University\, will help to significantly improve surgical outcomes\, patient recovery and the efficiency of surgical activities. Using data from MRI and CT scans\, OrganLike produces near exact copies of actual organs that require surgery. Prof Shu will showcase an example of these extraordinary organ models at the event. \nProf Paul Chapman\, Head of the School of Simulation and Visualisation at Glasgow School of Art will discuss the lack of accurate anatomic models of the human body have posed problems in medical education over the last decade. Paul will talk about GSA’s immersive medical training models including the breath-taking and ground-breaking 3D definitive human project that aspires to produce the most accurate and realistic digital 3D model the human ever made. Paul will demo this stunning 3D model and will also talk about GSA’s recent involvement in the medicines manufacturing space. Namely the use of immersive tech in the design and production of new medicines. \nDr. Alexander Weir\, Technical Manager of the AI Research team at Canon Medical and Canon’s lead on iCAIRD\, will talk about how AI has transformational potential for the future of healthcare; enabling earlier diagnosis and more efficient treatment for patients. Alexander will talk about the use of AI in medical diagnostics at CANON medical including CANON-funded AI currently being tested in Scotland to predict and detect disease – from stroke to cancer. He will also talk about iCAIRD – the new £15M Scottish centre of excellence for the application of AI in digital diagnostics. \nPamela Penn\, Head of Business Development at Current Health will talk about the companies revolutionary AI-enabled wearables that monitor vital signs with “ICU-level accuracy” and offers insights into a patient’s health\, alerting staff in case their condition shows signs of deterioration. Last year\, the start-up closed an $8m seed funding round led by ADV\, with participation from MMC Ventures and other private investors. The company’s vision is to monitor the health of every human being to identify deterioration earlier with the goal of saving lives. \nJanette Hughes\, Head of Planning and Performance at the Digital Health and Care Innovation Centre will also join the panel discussion. DESCRIPTION:Satellite applications for Smart Mobility: New Opportunities for Scotland \nWhen: 6 March 2019\, 09:30 – 15:30\nWhere: Gallery 4\, the Lighthouse\, Mitchell St\, Glasgow \nGlobal Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is the infrastructure that allows users with a compatible device to determine their position\, velocity and time by processing signals from satellites. An overwhelming majority of smartphones now rely on GNSS for location-based services for apps as well as navigation. The emerging areas of augmented reality and autonomous vehicles are supported by GNSS\, as well as insurance telematics black boxes\, Road User Charging and ride-hailing services. The applications are extensive and increasingly attainable. \nMaaS Scotland has teamed up with the Scottish Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications (SoXSA) to introduce you to the opportunities afforded by satellite data to the navigation and transport sector. With over 50 companies at the heart of the Scottish photonics cluster\, the economic impact is substantial. \nApproximately half of the cluster’s £750m output is exported\, with the rest supporting important domestic sectors including defence\, oil and gas\, renewable energy\, manufacturing and communications. \nAbout the Workshop \nOptical design is a rapidly developing field in the sector. Recent advancements in lasers\, compound semiconductors\, and end user applications\, coupled with growing demand for higher speed\, higher power photonic devices present increasingly challenging demands on optical system design. \nFaced with these increased performance requirements\, optical designers must utilise new technologies\, including improved software\, powerful computing platforms\, new optical materials and advanced coatings to improve overall optical and system performance. \nWith this in mind\, the Scottish Optoelectronics Association (SOA) has created an Optical Design Working Group\, meeting once a quarter and aimed at engineers\, scientists and designers. These workshops are designed to network\, explore new collaboration opportunities\, and stay up-to-date with advancements in this field. \nAt this half-day event\, attendees will hear one of Scotland’s leading photonics organisations discuss their current work\, strengths and challenges in optical design. With over 50 companies at the heart of the Scottish photonics cluster\, the economic impact is substantial. \nApproximately half of the cluster’s £750m output is exported\, with the rest supporting important domestic sectors including defence\, oil and gas\, renewable energy\, manufacturing and communications. \nAbout the Workshop \nOptical design is a rapidly developing field in the sector. Recent advancements in lasers\, compound semiconductors\, and end user applications\, coupled with growing demand for higher speed\, higher power photonic devices present increasingly challenging demands on optical system design. \nFaced with these increased performance requirements\, optical designers must utilise new technologies\, including improved software\, powerful computing platforms\, new optical materials and advanced coatings to improve overall optical and system performance. \nWith this in mind\, the Scottish Optoelectronics Association (SOA) has created an Optical Design Working Group\, meeting once a quarter and aimed at engineers\, scientists and designers.
