SUMMARY:Opening up Photonics: Unconscious Bias and Embedding Culture Change
DESCRIPTION:The Opening Up Photonics Initiative – a collaboration between Photonics Scotland\, University of Glasgow\, Institute of Physics and the Knowledge Transfer Network – has partnered with Equate Scotland to deliver a series of training workshops exploring practical suggestions for improving gender diversity within your organisation. \nBackground \nThe Photonics industry has long struggled to increase the participation and engagement of women. A recent SPIE study indicated that\, across Europe\, female representation in the sector is as low as 20%. \nIt is clear\, therefore\, that Scottish Photonics will need to target greater engagement from this underrepresented group to ensure the future success of the sector. As well as unlocking the well documented commercial and cultural benefits of a more gender diverse workforce\, this approach will be vital in securing the necessary number of skilled workers to support future growth. \nEarlier this year\, Photonics Scotland published a vision paper for the Photonics Sector in Scotland\, setting out a series of recommendations that will support the goal to triple the size of the sector by 2030. Included within these recommendations was the creation of a Women In Photonics Initiative that would seek to identify barriers to female engagement in the sector. Working with both industry and academia\, the initiative will look to provide employers and educators with the necessary tools to encourage more women into photonics careers. \nWorkshop – 29th January 2020 \nThis session starts by developing capacity in understanding prejudice and bias\, the consequences it can have on decision making\, and crucially\, develops strategic steps which can be taken to mitigate bias within processes\, systems and workplace culture. \nThe session then focuses on how whole organisation culture change can be achieved. We consider how equality and inclusion can be sustained at all levels of an organisation\, how it can become part of the everyday fabric and create an action plan to take forward. \nThis is the second in a series of workshops exploring gender diversity in Photonics. However\, previous attendance at the first workshop is not required for participation in this event. \nRegistration is free and spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This course is expected to be extremely popular and attendees will be limited to one per organisation. Please register quickly to avoid disappointment. \nAgenda \n09.30 Arrival – tea and coffee \n10.00 Welcomes and introduction \n10.15 Workshop Part 1 \n11.45 Coffee \n12.00 Workshop Part 2 \n13.00 Lunch \nSIGN UP NOW

SUMMARY:Data; Fuelling the Transport Technology Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Explore the role of data in supporting future transport solutions in this interactive workshop. \nTechnology is set to have a significant impact on the future of transport. The emergence of data led service models (Mobility as a Service) and connected and autonomous vehicles will transform the transport landscape\, creating new business models that will revolutionise the way we engage with our transport services. \nData will be a key enabler of this transformation. From fares to scheduling\, traffic management to vehicle positioning\, air quality to weather information\, data will support more informed travel choices and allow more efficient use of our transport assets. \nWith data at the core of future mobility\, questions must be asked about how it can best be used to support a more efficient and attractive transport network. \n• How do we best use data to support transport services? \n• How do we unlock the true value of data? \n• Who owns the data and who can access it? \n• Should it be standardised? \n• What changes to legislation or regulation may be required? \n• How do we keep it secure? \nThis workshop aims to explore these issues and others though discussions with a diverse range of stakeholders from within the transport\, communications and data communities. \nAgenda: \n0930      Arrival and coffee \n0955      Welcome \n1000      Ron Oren\, Strategic Initiative Lead\, Open Transport Data\, Connected Places Catapult \n1015      Richard Bradley\, Chief Information Officer\, qWallets \n1030      Panel Discussion \nParticipants: \nRichard Bradley\, Chief Information Officer\, qWallets \nRobin Knight\, Partnerships Director\, Stagecoach \nDave McConnachie\, Chief Commercial Officer\, Eyecademy \nRon Oren\, Strategic Initiative Lead\, Open Transport Data\, Connected Places Catapult \nPeter Jackson\, Active Travel Officer\, SEStrans \nHayden Sutherland\, Director\, Ideal Interface \n1115      Coffee \n1140      Roundtable discussions \n1240      Networking Lunch \n1330      IdealInterface workshop – Open standard for mobility accounts \n1500      Close

SUMMARY:Advanced in Optical Design: Workshop 4
DESCRIPTION:Where: UK ATC\, Royal Observatory\, Blackford Hill View\, Edinburgh\, EH9 3HJ \nWhen: 15 January 2019\, 09:30 – 12:30 \nIf you wish to attend this event\, please email emma.dixon@technologyscotland.scot \n** Please note: tickets to this event are limited and reserved strictly for optical designers currently based in Scotland ** \nPhotonics in Scotland \nFor over a century\, Scotland has been at the cutting edge of photonic innovation. With over 50 companies at the heart of the Scottish photonics cluster\, the economic impact is substantial. \nApproximately half of the cluster’s £750m output is exported\, with the rest supporting important domestic sectors including defence\, oil and gas\, renewable energy\, manufacturing and communications. \nAbout the Workshop \nOptical design is a rapidly developing field in the sector. Recent advancements in lasers\, compound semiconductors\, and end user applications\, coupled with growing demand for higher speed\, higher power photonic devices present increasingly challenging demands on optical system design. \nFaced with these increased performance requirements\, optical designers must utilise new technologies\, including improved software\, powerful computing platforms\, new optical materials and advanced coatings to improve overall optical and system performance. \nWith this in mind\, the Scottish Optoelectronics Association (SOA) has created an Optical Design Working Group\, meeting once a quarter and aimed at engineers\, scientists and designers. These workshops are designed to network\, explore new collaboration opportunities\, and stay up-to-date with advancements in this field. \nAt this half-day event\, attendees will hear one of Scotland’s leading photonics organisations discuss their current work\, strengths and challenges in optical design. Following that\, we will discuss opportunities regarding training in Optical Design in Scotland.
