SUMMARY:Photonics for Space Special Interest Group
DESCRIPTION:Photonics for Space Special Interest Group \nWednesday 24 March | 0930 – 1100 | Online \n  \n  \nBackground: Photonics in the space sector \nFor over a century\, Scotland has been at the cutting edge of photonics innovation. With over 60 companies at the heart of the Scottish photonics cluster\, this ‘invisible technology’ underpins a vast range of vertical markets. One of these markets\, and a currently growing sector for Scotland\, is space. \nAlmost one fifth of all UK jobs in the space sector are based in Scotland. Scotland produces more small satellites than any other country in Europe\, and aims to be the first country in Europe to provide a complete solution for the manufacture and launch of small satellites\, supporting satellite and environmental data analysis and critical earth observation. \nTechnology Scotland in partnership with the Higgs Centre for Innovation\, is currently exploring ways to further highlight the role of photonics in the space sector\, with particular emphasis on supporting members to realise potential opportunities\, removing some of the stigmas surrounding barriers to the space sector\, signposting towards relevant funding and nurturing a community to help build an ecosystem for the space sector within Scotland. \n  \nObjectives of this Special Interest Group \nTechnology Scotland’s Photonics for Space Special Interest Group will have an overarching goal to support its members to understand the opportunities that exist for photonics companies within the space sector. We recognise that this sector can be perceived as having barriers to entry; however there are potentially good opportunities for our members. Non-participation can often be attributed to a basic lack of knowledge relating to specific markets\, test requirements\, manufacturing considerations\, or regulatory frameworks. \nTechnology Scotland’s Photonics for Space Special Interest Group aims to allay these apprehensions by improving visibility of the potential opportunities and sharing the experience of those already operating in the local supply chain\, creating forums for knowledge exchange and collaboration and signposting to appropriate support. \nIn this first meeting of the Photonics for Space Special Interest Group we shall set the scene for the potential opportunities within the space sector for photonics companies\, and give a brief overview of the support and potential funding available. The experience of some companies already working in the sector will also be shared before having a round-table discussion to gain a better understanding of what this Special Interest Group can do to smooth the route into the space sector for new entrants from the photonics industry. \n  \nREGISTER TODAY

SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT – Navigating the Design to Manufacture Journey: Design Thinking and Systems Principles
DESCRIPTION:Design Thinking and Systems Principles \n1st July  12:00 – 13:00 \nThe last session in our 12-week series is about considering the challenges of navigating the design to manufacture journey holistically. \nWe underline the importance of thinking about inter-dependencies and gradually maturing information across integral decision areas rather than locking down decisions in a siloed and sequential fashion. A systems approach has been proven to help realise better results\, mitigate risks and reduce time and cost overruns. Some leading thinkers explore how these approaches can be applied to navigating the design to manufacture journey. \nSpeakers \n\nTristan Allen\, Room 44\n\n“Futureproofing and culturing an innovative mindset” \n\nNeil Stone\, LeapStone\, (Former head of Design\, British Airways)\n\n“Design led innovation” \n\nMartin Aston\, Brunel Challenge | Airbus\n\n“Systems Thinking for hardware start-ups” \n  \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT – Navigating the Design to Manufacture Journey: Building Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:Building Supply Chains \n17th June  12:00 – 13:00 \nOne of the most common things we get asked is “can you help me find someone to manufacture x\, y\, z”. An accessible and affordable manufacturing process ought to be considered and planned early in the design journey. Often it is an after thought and this is an approach that creates problems. This session will explore how to think about scale up and\, importantly\, how to build the relationships to make it happen. \nSpeakers \n\nJay Bal\n\n“Hardware start-up supply chain development” \n\nPete Wood\, RS Components -Designspark\n\n“Thinking about low volume and prototyping whilst planning for beyond” \n\nReshoring UK – TBC.\n\n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT – Navigating the Design to Manufacture Journey: Risks\, Regulation & Standards
DESCRIPTION:   Risks\, Regulation and Standards \n10th June  12:00 – 13:00 \nHardware development is fraught with risks. There is risk to the project inherent in the uncertainty of design and the progressive impact of changes made late in the process.  There is also responsibility on the developer to consider the efficacy and safety of the product through its life-cycle. Can it be manufactured and used as intended? Are there unintended consequences that due care could avoid? Regulations and standards exist to protect users and manufacturers as well as the hardware developers themselves. In this session\, we’ll hear about different challenges and approaches associated with risk\, regulation and standards. This is a broad topic and we will just scratch the surface but there will be an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A session. \nSpeakers \n\nStuart Kelly\, Designer\, Systolic\n\n“Risk in product design” \n\nRory Ingram\, Product Realisation team lead\, AFRC\n\n“Thinking about regulation and risk in hardware development for high integrity sectors” \n\nAlasdair Walker\, Owner\, Lorit Consultancy\n\n“Creating a culture of safety” \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Opening up Photonics: Unconscious Bias and Embedding Culture Change
DESCRIPTION:The Opening Up Photonics Initiative – a collaboration between Photonics Scotland\, University of Glasgow\, Institute of Physics and the Knowledge Transfer Network – has partnered with Equate Scotland to deliver a series of training workshops exploring practical suggestions for improving gender diversity within your organisation. \nBackground \nThe Photonics industry has long struggled to increase the participation and engagement of women. A recent SPIE study indicated that\, across Europe\, female representation in the sector is as low as 20%. \nIt is clear\, therefore\, that Scottish Photonics will need to target greater engagement from this underrepresented group to ensure the future success of the sector. As well as unlocking the well documented commercial and cultural benefits of a more gender diverse workforce\, this approach will be vital in securing the necessary number of skilled workers to support future growth. \nEarlier this year\, Photonics Scotland published a vision paper for the Photonics Sector in Scotland\, setting out a series of recommendations that will support the goal to triple the size of the sector by 2030. Included within these recommendations was the creation of a Women In Photonics Initiative that would seek to identify barriers to female engagement in the sector. Working with both industry and academia\, the initiative will look to provide employers and educators with the necessary tools to encourage more women into photonics careers. \nWorkshop – 29th January 2020 \nThis session starts by developing capacity in understanding prejudice and bias\, the consequences it can have on decision making\, and crucially\, develops strategic steps which can be taken to mitigate bias within processes\, systems and workplace culture. \nThe session then focuses on how whole organisation culture change can be achieved. We consider how equality and inclusion can be sustained at all levels of an organisation\, how it can become part of the everyday fabric and create an action plan to take forward. \nThis is the second in a series of workshops exploring gender diversity in Photonics. However\, previous attendance at the first workshop is not required for participation in this event. \nRegistration is free and spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This course is expected to be extremely popular and attendees will be limited to one per organisation. Please register quickly to avoid disappointment. \nAgenda \n09.30 Arrival – tea and coffee \n10.00 Welcomes and introduction \n10.15 Workshop Part 1 \n11.45 Coffee \n12.00 Workshop Part 2 \n13.00 Lunch \nSIGN UP NOW
